Toxoplasmosis

If, as deep ecologists say,
all life is connected,
what shall I make of my kinship
with Toxoplasma gondii,
the protozoan that invaded
my left eye?

Cousin, I needed to kill you
before you killed me.
The battle was arduous.
You almost won.
I honor you for that.

As token of truce between us,
I respect your right
to exist in your countless billions
in the garden soil where I place
my hands.
