On Mountain Goats

See, that far patch of snow
sometimes looks like a mountain goat.

If it moves, it is true.

And if it doesn’t, who’s to say
it wasn’t a contemplative goat,
thinking on alpine flowers and snowmelt
the whole time we watched it?

*

Now, seeing how still they lie
in the sun, on cliff’s edge,
I believe it was a mountain goat.
