It’s not her job to discern the lies,
only to write down what they say.
Her hand dashes across the page,
recording the facts of their lives –
brothers who left a year ago
the rice bin in the family home
the number of steps to the front door.
She pauses to wonder why
nine out of ten children are boys.
But in her industry she does not see
the verses they write on the walls,
their tears tossing in the surf,
the truths they cast into the fog.
