March in Snoqualmie

Just before the Middle Fork, four elk trot
       across the single-path gravel,
unmapped forest-road, winter’s shruggy humps
       and shaggy coats in passing,

ample shudder, last antler, muscled neck
       of the cold’s steamy nose,
memory of snow, before the overflowing
       banks of the swelling spring.
